TEXTO CURATORIAL / CURATORIAL TEXT

The Tropic of the Llama
The Tropic of Capricorn is an astronomical latitude located about 23° south of the Equator. It marks the southernmost point where the sun’s rays fall directly overhead at noon during the December solstice, separating the Southern Hemisphere’s tropical and temperate zones. In the Americas, this ring connects two vast oceans across a continuous landmass. Throughout history, people learned to cross the seas by building vessels propelled by oars, sails, and engines. From the western shores, goods began to travel across the Pacific toward Asia. From the east, they crossed the Atlantic on their way to Europe.
When Northern powers divided the world into North and South, the ports along this latitude expelled natural wealth and, in return, received migrants, diseases, and some technology. Those countries left without an outlet to the ocean—Paraguay and Bolivia—remained voiceless. Yet port cities are both mouth and anus: Santos, Valparaíso, Callao, Antofagasta, and Guayaquil smell of fish; they are not for everyone.
Capital cities in the Global South often have bloodshot eyes from high blood pressure, with roads spreading like tentacles or open veins. What happens in the continent’s belly? What sounds resonate in the guts of South America? What if we could turn the two faces of the Southern Cone—the eastern and the western—so they could face each other, looking toward their green and fertile belly?
The journey inward is also a journey backward. To know ourselves by crossing land, desert, pampas, jungle, and wetlands. To retrace the paths of ancient cultures by following shells strung into Amazonian necklaces or parrot feathers used in funerary offerings from the Andean highlands. To listen to the sky without fearing the dark.
In the Southern Cone, most postcolonial lines run vertically, while horizontal traces belong to nature, such as the Amazon, Biobío, and Orinoco rivers. The route from Antofagasta to Santos stretches for 3,400 kilometers, crossing the world’s largest ocean, the driest desert, the longest mountain range, and the rainforest that remains the largest in the world. At each stop, it offers coca tea, mate, guaraná soda, and, at the end, a restorative Brazilian coffee.
This route is the oxygen between the two oceans. You must touch the ground to understand where you are. In the New World, nature operates on another scale; it teaches us to locate ourselves and remember where we come from. Mountains, trees, rivers, heat, rocks, and sky acquire different meanings. Fortunately, intangible things cannot be stolen, sold, or exported. The route emerges as a counterpoint to the commercial corridor that will slice South America in two, connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific and vice versa, just as the Panama Canal does to the north and the Strait of Magellan to the south.
But the Tropic of Capricorn is not fixed: its position shifts continuously because of a subtle wobble in the Earth’s orientation as it travels around the Sun. The planet’s axial tilt changes over time. As a result, the imaginary path has no stable location; it is always drifting. We travel along a route that is itself in motion.
A creature from the Western zodiac opens the trail. But at a closer look, what Northern tradition calls Capricorn could also be a caravan llama, a symbol of exchange and encounter. It is the llama that will now cross Mato Grosso, reconnecting us and helping us find the way back, through the crossing of past and present languages; the ancestral and the legitimized; and ties with Africa and Australia as well. At night, the llama runs along the circle, crossing the lands and seas of the Global South. The word tropic comes from the Greek tropikós and means “turn”. One full circuit measures nearly 37,000 kilometers.
Capricorn is a European fusion of goat and serpent without offspring, while the llama, together with her creatures, paints the Milky Way across the sky with her milk. Let us move along that imaginary line, along its rebellious horizontal path toward the riches that await us, not to extract them, but to recognize and share them among all those who inhabit this route, whether physically or imaginatively.
